Jewish Family Service LA
Community Focused Communications to Amplify Essential Social Services
Situation
Jewish Family Service LA (JFSLA)—Los Angeles’s oldest social service provider—serves tens of thousands of Angelenos annually through various services, including senior care, homelessness prevention, food security and domestic violence support.
Despite JFSLA’s legacy and community impact, there was a lack of public awareness around the scope of its work. JFSLA partnered with Miller Ink to highlight its executive leadership team, position the organization as a critical piece of L.A.’s safety net, and showcase its services to those in need and potential donors.
Approach
To increase Jewish Family Service LA’s reach, Miller Ink developed a strategic communications plan to elevate its media presence across Jewish and local mainstream news outlets. Miller Ink uncovered stories of impact and pitched these to target broadcast and print media by identifying relevant trends in the news cycle for JFSLA.
For example, with Social Security facing cuts in 2025, we invited broadcast reporters to visit a JFSLA senior center and speak with potentially affected clients, who shared firsthand how Social Security and JFSLA’s resources help them make ends meet.
Miller Ink also works to position JFSLA’s senior leadership as thought leaders in the agency’s primary service areas, including older adult advocacy and homelessness prevention. We drafted statements and placed op-eds on pressing issues such as homelessness and federal funding cuts. Miller Ink also coordinated media interviews for senior leadership to discuss key issues, including food insecurity, the high cost of living and government budget shortfalls. This helped humanize the organization and capture the expertise of its leaders.
When wildfires ravaged Los Angeles in early 2025, Miller Ink quickly worked to amplify JFSLA’s emergency response efforts and ensure impacted Angelenos were aware of the organization’s services and how to access them. Through targeted media outreach, Miller Ink helped guarantee that fire victims seeking emergency food, shelter, and mental health resources got the support they needed from JFSLA.
Impact
Miller Ink has increased awareness of JFSLA’s key services through media coverage in the Los Angeles Times, LA Daily News, LA Magazine, The Forward, eJewish Philanthropy, Jewish News Syndicate and The Jewish Journal. By increasing JFSLA’s visibility, Miller Ink helps position JFSLA as a leading voice in L.A.’s social services sector and further deepens trust with its partners and the communities it serves.
As a result of Miller Ink’s outreach during the devastating Los Angeles fires, JFSLA earned a reputation for its fire relief support. The organization received a $250,000 grant from the FireAid benefit concert to aid its work supporting L.A.’s most vulnerable. JFSLA was also one of six local organizations selected to subcontract with FEMA to support long-term wildfire case management, cementing its role as a frontline service provider in Los Angeles.
